SOLAR ECLIPSE SALT SEA At the end of the world lies a boundless white salt sea. The sky is blue almost without gradation; the salt crystals spread like fine glass all the way to the horizon. At the centre of the salt sea stands a black circular gate, without words, without ornament, so tall it seems to set a night upright in the middle of day. Tens of thousands of people in ivory-white robes come from every direction. They carry no weapons and raise no banners; they leave only neat, silent footprints in the wind. At the centre of the crowd is Yia, twenty-six, deep brown skin, a long thin braid trailing from closely cropped black hair. She wears a dark red robe that falls in layers, plain silver rings at her cuffs and ankles, and in her palm a seed with the sheen of obsidian. Dark red is the only vivid colour on the white salt sea. She walks to the gate and lays the seed into a thin crack beneath it. The sun begins to be covered, slowly, by the black gate. The wind stops; every white robe goes still at once. The coarse salt sea turns smooth — an endless mirror holding the crowd, the gate and the sky complete beneath their feet. Daylight narrows to a single sharp white rim, and a line splits open at the centre of the gate; pure white light falls from the zenith, passing through Yia and the soundless sea of people. The moment the light touches the seed, the black shell cracks. The parched salt ground beneath Yia does not collapse — a single drop of deep blue water surfaces. It spreads quickly along the cracks, pushing the salt crystals aside, and the mirrored salt sea becomes a slowly breathing blue. The white-robed stand at the edge of the new water; for the first time, there are clouds in the reflected sky. The eclipse ends and the sunlight falls again. The black gate still stands silent at the centre of the salt sea, but its reflection is now cut in two by the deep blue water. Yia takes off her dark red outer robe and lays it gently on the surface; the cloth opens into a small red sail and carries the sprouted black seed away, towards the bright horizon.
